STAVROS KOTSIREAS Artists Statement 'The Awakening'
(Art Work submitted to 1st Recycled Art competition)

‘The Awakening’ is a diptych, comprising the source of inspiration [still life - mixed
Technique construction], and the inspired work [painting-Oil on linen,] which are experienced as one piece of art work.

Content:
In the source: With the use of Recycled materials Nature finds herself wearing a gas mask that is ineffective in protecting her against the onslaught of consumerism and its impact on the ecosystem.

In the inspired work: The bar-code, symbol of consumerism, moves to the foreground and dominates the composition - as Nature weakens in the background.

It is a two stage creative process which involves;
1.construction of the 3D visual source of inspiration – the captured still life
2.production of a painting inspired by the source

The source of inspiration and the inspired painting coexist as one unit in the same space – capturing and preserving my inner creative journey from still life to painting.

1st RECYCLED ART COMPETITION
'SHAPE THE FUTURE'

Among the complex and delicate relations that concern nowadays the environment, in terms of human behavior, implementation of ethics and waste reduction, new instruments can be developed.
SHAPE THE FUTURE is a Recycled Art Competition created by You Are Home Itinerant Eco-village organization and a side-event of the upcoming “ISOCULTURE” project (6 March - 26 May 2013), created by Michael Burton and Michiko Nitta and held at the Watermans Arts Centre. ISOCULTURE is the major gallery project for 2013 and it will redesigns the city as a closed system where humans are entirely self-sustaining.
We are going to integrate the concept of ISOCULTURE into SHAPE THE FUTURE ‘Living and Design the City’ competition: it will aim to develop an art platform of artists who use recycled material to express their visions.
We look for artists and experimenters to create new experiences; we seek innovators to develop new aesthetic layers and concepts by using recycled material involving all the aspects of sustainability, eco-productions and self-resiliency.
In this way, we hope to get a new art ambiance, a language of art more coherent to and resilient with the environment. From this effort a core group of artists with common vision and goals will emerge.
SHAPE THE FUTURE will be the closing event of ISOCULTURE at Watermans.
Come and join us!!!
